Essay #3

Amy Plastow

English 101

Do you think that you can make an outstanding impact on what happens in the future? Most people would say no to that question because it seems that only well-known people like Bill Gates or Steve Jobs could do something that big that has an impact on the future. But that isn’t always the way things have to be. One example is how you can change the atmosphere, one step at a time, therefore you can change the future, starting right now! If you weren’t so immediate to answer that first question then I’ll ask you this, do you want to change the world? Almost everyone would answer that question with a big YES! Everyone wants to change the Earth in some way, the specific way to change the world that I am talking about is by recycling.

Everyone on this planet wants to be here as long as they feel they should, and everyone including you probably want their grandchildren and great grandchildren to have that same experience. So in order to ensure that everyone will have the life they should live, people have to make some changes to their lifestyles. That can start with recycling, you can will reduce the effects that cause global warming significantly. If global warming gets stopped, even if it’s temporary by a few thousand years, you are still extending the globe’s lifespan and it thanks you for that.

I myself have been recycling for as long as I can remember. Before I was born it wasn’t as popular, but my parents made sure to reuse anything that they could and to be cautious where they dispose their items. When my sister and I got to the age where we started realizing what am impact recycling has, we started doing it almost immediately. Now we recycle paper, cardboard, plastic, aluminum, glass and more. Anything that can basically be recycled, we do it all.

We want planet Earth to stay here as long as possible, life is precious and it shouldn’t end from greenhouse gasses that partially could have been reduced from recycling. There are several good things that come out of recycling. But, there are some downsides to it as well.

Recycling can protect the environment, for example, when we recycle paper, less trees are getting cut down because the demand for paper is getting lessened, so they have to shorten the supply. When less trees are getting cut down we are saving all of the species that depend on the forest for protection, shelter, and a home.

According to Conserve Energy Future, when you recycle there is less pollution getting sent out into the atmosphere Jason Brennon who works for Affluent Magazine says that recycling just half of your yearly recyclable household waste saves 2,400 pounds of CO2 being released into the atmosphere? So if everyone globally starts recycling their recyclables year round then we could slow down global warming. Additionally, when massive waste is burned it produces a tremendous amount of greenhouse gas emissions, like CO2 and CFC’s (Chlorofluorocarbons) (CEF). Recycling centers make sure that their burning process has the least amount of wasted gases. They take whatever gas’s that are given off in the burning process and contain them, then they make sure those gasses are used for something they are needed for.

Recycling will allow you to conserve natural resources. When a new product is made, fresh raw materials from beneath Earth’s surface will have to be mined and extracted, which is a lot of unnecessary work to do.  It makes a lot more sense to use what we already have on the surface and just reuse it. We can change its form, density, all sorts of things, so why do people have the need to continuously bringing new materials up from below? By recycling we can save the Earth’s materials and get what we want at the same time! It’s a win-win situation. (CEF).

Plastic is a non-biodegradable item, which means that it will never break down and compost. Unlike a banana peel that will dissolve into the soil. So if you ever see a plastic bag on the side of the road while on a walk you should pick it up and recycle it, because it will still be there 2000 years later, potentially harming the soil and stopping plants from growing.

Fossil fuels takes millions of years to form, so we have to reduce the usage of them if we want to have some for the future generations. We have to use these fossil fuels wisely and carefully. Recycling doesn’t use any fossil fuels, so that is one way that you can stop using the fossil fuels.

In some states of the USA you get money back for recycling, which is a good motive if you are going to start recycling. The states that pay you to recycle are California, Connecticut, Hawaii, Iowa, Massachusetts, Maine, Michigan, New York, Oregon, and Vermont. My friend Jacob has a family member who lives in Connecticut, he says, “There is a machine that you can put your aluminum cans in one by one and you get a receipt for it with money”.

One of the downsides to recycling is that Methane gas is produced during the process of burning/melting down recyclables. If that gas gets leaked out, then it is hazardous to global warming and also to ozone depletion. Like I mentioned before, it does happen, which is why the recycling centers try their hardest to not let the gasses leak out. If it does happen it wouldn’t be as much methane being put out into the ozone layer than if you didn’t recycle at all. If people have any concerns with the jobs of people when sorting through wastes and coming across toxins they should know that the employers are safe when they are at work. The average recycle plant worker goes to work wearing a hard hat, goggles, two layers of gloves and high top, steel-toed boots. Also, if any chemical does come in contact with them they take care of it as soon as possible if not immediately (HerladNet).

Some people might say that Global Warming is a myth, that it isn’t real. Actually, thanks to science we know that for 650,000 years the carbon dioxide (parts per million) level has not been above 300 (PPM), right now it is at 400(PPM). That is a huge increase for the atmosphere. The warming trend right now is most likely human-induced. (NASA)

As you can see by now, recycling is important to me, and it should be important to you as well.  If you aren’t sure on how you can start recycling it is not hard at all. You just have to get a bin(s) that you can put all your recyclables in, separating them of course by material. Make sure to do your research on where the closest recycle bins are, either you can bring them there and dump them out yourself or you can pay to have the county come out and get them.

Recycling is really a magnificent thing to do, who ever thought of it is a genius! Buying recycled items like carpet, purses, and shoes are getting more and more popular every day. Just think twice before you throw your soda can into the garbage, it could be going somewhere else, where the materials would be getting reused instead of buried in stinky garbage. I recycle, my family recycles, and you should too. Start recycling today and save planet Earth.

http://www.conserve-energy-future.com/advantages-and-disadvantages-of-recycling.php

On the website called Conserve Energy Future it says, "Recycling is nothing but process of using old or waste products into new products. It makes us feel proud of taking an important step towards reducing pollution and recycling is a fun activity especially when done in groups".

http://www.affluentmagazine.com/articles/article/69

In his online article for Affluent Magazine, Jason Brennan explains the good things that come with recycling.

http://ngm.nationalgeographic.com/2008/01/high-tech-trash/recycling-text

On the National Geographic website Tom Zeller Jr. talks about the importance of recycling. It is in this magazine article that it talks about the future and what recycling cities are trying to do; "They’re also working to reduce the economic costs".

Analysis of a Short Piece of Writing

This news article is about how they have found the second largest diamond, which was found in Botswana.

http://www.bbc.com/news/world-africa-34867929
The world's second-largest gem quality diamond has been discovered in Botswana, the Lucara Diamond firm says.
The 1,111-carat stone was recovered from its Karowe mine, about 500km (300 miles) north of the capital, Gaborone.
It is the biggest diamond to be discovered in Botswana and the largest find in more than a century.
The 3,106-carat Cullinan diamond was found in South Africa in 1905 and cut into nine separate stones, many of which are in the British Crown Jewels.
"The significance of the recovery of a gem quality stone larger than 1,000 carats, the largest for more than a century... cannot be overstated," William Lamb, the CEO of Lucara Diamond, a Canadian diamond producer, said in a statement.
Lucara says two other "exceptional" white diamonds - an 813-carat stone and a 374-carat stone - were also found at the Karowe mine.
"I am truly at a loss for words. This has been an amazing week for Lucara with the recovery of the second largest and also the sixth largest gem quality diamonds ever mined," Mr Lamb said.
Botswana is the world's largest producer of diamonds and the trade has transformed it into a middle-income nation.

They did a great job explaining where they found the diamond. They also explained how for Botswana, it was a big deal. One of the finders also explained that there were more diamonds, just of smaller size. The article also tells us that Botswana is the worlds largest producer of diamonds.
Overall, I believe this was a great article, because it is so fascinating to read. But they could have added more information, like what they will do with the diamond now, or what they think they are going to do.

Thinking About the Text p 92-100

1. The author, Katherine Spriggs has made me believe that buying locally is better. I already try to buy as much local fruits and vegetables as I can but sometimes it just isn't convenient and so ill go to a grocery store. Spriggs explained several different reasons why we should buy locally from farmers markets or local farms. Since she was really into her topic it helped me feel her passion towards this. Katherine Spriggs also added a couple opposed views on her topic, which she came back and had excellent explanations for them. She knew all of her facts and had really good statistics.
2. She mentions Alex Avery's opinion on how we should "buy food from the world region where it grows best". Which makes a good point because we shouldn't be trying to grow fruits that grow well in Florida in Western Washington. She comes back saying that it would be a waste of time and so we should just buy locally and just eat the fruits and vegetables that are in season.
3. In the second paragraph of On Buying Local, Katherine Spriggs states all of her topics that she will be later discussed in this essay. She states her position right away, she says all the good things that  come from buying local. Her clearness on why her topic matters is very obvious, the entire paragraph is focused on that mainly. Although she does not mention the opposing views in this paragraph she does mention how it helps and supports small businesses and farms, which appeals to anyone who loves to help.
4. All of Katherine Spriggs photos in her essay makes her point even more valid. The first photo is of some Organic Winter Squash, which was probably in season when this photo was taken. The caption talks about how it is good to shop at farmers markets to support and strengthen the local economy. Figure 2 shows a small polyculture farm, which is also important in making her argument. Then the third picture shows the opposite, a large monoculture farm. On page 97 it shows Figure 4 which shows four large semi trucks which is hauling food that is being transported. The caption says "Interstate trucking is expensive finically and economically". Which shows another reason why you should by locally, to help the economy. All of these photos have been added to help Spriggs make her point more justifiable.

In Class Video Analyses

We all chose three different videos.

Someone dies in every video.

Pathos:

All use emotional appeals of people who were close with the victim(s) like their parents.

Sad music which hits your emotions

They all had close ups.

Logos:

They all involved driving accidents and the driver doing something they shouldn’t be doing.

The statistics of their age, being in their late teens, appeals to logic.

In one of the videos there was a doctor speaking.

Ethos:

They all built up the victim’s character and the credibility of the speakers.

To identify the relationship the speakers had with the victims they had labels.

Drinking and Driving Summary and Analysis

The video I watched was Drinking and Driving. This was a story about two teenage sisters who had gotten in a car accident with one of their friends. One of the sisters was the driver, she was intoxicated, and her sister and friend were passengers, who were also intoxicated. The friend who survived was telling a story on how when they left the party the drive, which was one of the sisters, seemed fine enough to drive. At the time they didn't realize how much of a hazard it still was to drive with an intoxicated driver even if she wasn't falling over drunk.
The parents were also in this video. They started a fundraiser that is a "safe rides phone" which means that if anyone needs a ride home from a party, someone will always come get them. The parents don't want the girls to be forgotten.
The music in this video is very somber and it gets to your emotions. It shows pictures of the car after the accident which really hits the heart. The parents involvement in this video really show their compassion and love for their daughters and how they hope no one else has to go through this.

Peace Sign Buttons

The first button suggests just peace symbol and fancy writing. The second basically says that peace is love not war, also that there is no love in war. The first button says “Peace”. The second button says “Make Love Not War”. They both have a universal peace sign. People wore these buttons in protest to the wars going on in the 60’s. The button on the left is more relaxed with its wavy font, the one on the right is saying you should do this. It is more bold and specified, also, it is stricter and sharp, and clear cut lines.

Symbols of Patriotism--- USA, Great Britain, and France

They are suggesting that patriotism comes in different forms. America has a Bald Eagle with an American Flag. Great Britain has a Bulldog and the national flag. Lastly, France has a motto, Liberte (freedom), Egalite (equality), Fraternite (fraternity/brotherhood).  The first image on the left is sharp, with the lines of the flag to the outline of the bird with the black background, it shows how severe and strong the USA is. The eagle represents freedom because birds can go anywhere, they are limitless.  Great Britain’s flag in this picture looks like it expands forever. The dog standing atop of it has a proud and big stance. France, the picture to the right might be a little contradictory because there is a security camera in the picture, when the quote contains the word “freedom”.

THESIS: Every nation has something to represent it that stands for the nation's pride. These three images convey this in the manner explained below.

The bald eagle represents to American citizens strength and bravery. In the image the eagle is integrated with the flag signifying that it has become part of the nation. The bulldog looks like it is guarding flag which is a symbol of the nation, discouraging enemies from challenging them. France's motto is showing its strength by being written in stone.

In Class Lab 11/10 Tim Wise

What ARGUMENTS does the author make? He has a stance as whether or not we should use the N-word as white people. His position is that white people should not use that word, it is none or our business. Yes by answering these questions we will be analyzing.

How persuasive do you find the argument? It is very persuasive, Tim Wise gives a lot of examples and he is very informed with his argument. He also wrote a book and during the video he would quote some lines from it. None of Tim’s assumptions are questionable, he seems credible. His white friend didn’t understand why he couldn’t use that word even though his friends (black or white) used that word. It like his analogy with your mom, you can say whatever you want about your own mom but no one else dares or you will be very upset. “His Jewish grandfather can make jokes about Jews, but the local Christian church cannot”.

What is the authors STANCE? Tim is very biased. Any argument is biased in its own way. Since Tim is from the south, he knows the community and how they can use the N-word or certain phrases that have a negative effect on certain communities. Tim Wise does consider the opposing views, he talks about how some white people think they are helping the black community by saying it. Tim acknowledged other viewpoints but he only cited his own.

Does the publisher bring a certain stance to the work? The book publisher(s) had to have agreed with Tim and his stance in some way.

Do you recognize ideas you’ve run across in other sources? We know that as white people we don’t have the right to say the N-word.

Does this source support or challenge your own position?  We agree with his

What can you tell about the intended AUDIENCE and PURPOSE?  The audience is mainly white people. The purpose is to convince white people that they have no right to use that word. We are members of the audience addressed. The main purpose is to argue a certain point.

p 269-284 Summary

Humans encounter arguments every day. We are not always aware that we are making an argument though. We also have to be very cautious when we do make one, because not everyone might not interpret it the same way that we do. Some arguments might even effect your future, so think carefully. You have to always looks at who the argument is coming from, one source might not be as educated as the other. How do you want to appear in your argument? What's at stake? Those are both questions you have to consider when making a public argument. You always have to state your claim, usually in your thesis. So when writing an argument paper you have to remember to consider all of these things. Some might be more easy and obvious than others. But remember that arguments are in everyday life and so naturally, you are a pro at it.

THINK ABOUT YOUR WRITING p 70

Over the last week I took time to send a letter to Jefferson County. I expressed my anger and concern about how we need a street light when turning onto my road. A few people have been killed at this intersection and there is still not a turn lane, so I figured a street light would be just as fine. When turning onto my road you have to stop in the middle of the highway when people are going 60 mph and then turn onto the main road that I live on. So usually people get mad and honk or give you the middle finger, just because you had to stop to turn on to your road. The reason I want a street light is because at night it is worse. I try not to take that route home at night but sometimes it is quicker. It is very dangerous though at night. You can't turn your brights on to take a better look because there is always someone coming around the corner in the other lane, so you can't blind them. So in the end you have to be super slow and cautious and then you won't miss the turn. Overall, having a street light would be a lot safer for the few hundred people who live on my road.

Yes We Can

In my opinion, having famous people and non famous people recite the Presidents words makes the speech very effective. It shows us that people acknowledge things that are being said and we are making them known. I feel as if no one made "Yes, We Can" a big deal then it would go unnoticed. That speech is a very powerful speech and turning it into a song makes it even more noticeable and honored. This music video hits every cultural, and it even has some sign language. There is a mother with her son saying "yes, we can". Having all of those people say the phrases "Yes, We Can" and "hope" it shows that we do have hope and yes we can do things we set our minds to. Everyone us capable of something and if you feel as if you aren't going to succeed, have hope. If it was just WILL.I.AM doing this song it would be boring, people would be thinking "what the heck is this guy trying to do" but when he as other people with him in this music video, you can really feel the purpose and the Presidents words really effect the watchers point of view.

Taking Stock Essay #2

1.        How did you go about analyzing the text? What methods did you use—and which ones were most helpful?
I just described the picture ads and explained why they are misleading and how they don't really portray the correct information.
2.       How did you go about drafting your essay?
I started by analyzing one ad, then the next. Then I wrote the introduction, and after that I wrote the pieces in-between the ads that connect them and make the writing flow more easily. Lastly, I did the conclusion, which was pretty easy for me.
3.       How well did you organize your written analysis? What, if anything, could you do to make it easier to read?
I think I did everything necessary in order to make it “flow," as one would say. I tried my hardest to make my analysis be easy to read and to not have anyone stuck on something then jumping into the next picture ad. I think I did a really good job analyzing the two ads I picked.
4.       Did you provide sufficient evidence to support your analysis?
I did provide sufficient evidence to support my analysis. I believe I covered everything I needed to in order to explain why the ads are misleading to the consumers.
5.       What did you do especially well?
I think I explained these ads really well. I believe that I covered all of the aspects to each one and analyzed it to my best ability.
6.       What could still be improved?
I might be able to elaborate more on the introduction. But I still believe that I did a really good job.
7.       Did you use any visuals, and if so, what did they add? Could you have shown the same thing with words?
I did not use any visuals, all I did was describe what the pictures look like and what they are portraying.
8.       How did other readers' responses influence your writing?
The two students who edited my paper said that it was really good. Other than a few grammatical errors there wasn't much that they changed. So they didn't really influence it much more after they read through it.
9.       What would you do differently next time?
I don’t think I would do anything differently. I feel pretty confident in the way my essay turned out and I believe that I did the best of my ability to explain to the reader why the ads are confusing.
10.   Are you pleased with your analysis? What did it teach you about the text you analyzed? Did it make you want to study more works by the same writer or artist?
I am super happy with the way my analysis turned out. It actually makes me want to write another analysis paper. I feel like ever since we started the whole ad analysis thing in class I will be really studying ads way more than the average person does. I will look at them and know their flaws.
11.   What are the transferrable  skills you can take from this into other writing situations?
I will now go in more detail when I am writing more. It makes the piece of writing a lot more interesting and people will be more likely to actually read it and like it.

Collaborative Exercise 11/5

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jOUiAr9-KSo

This video posts a stance that says that we as a generation are too attached to the internet.  The second that it dies everybody freaks out and starts yelling at each other.  This appeals to us because we use the internet all the time every day, and we would go crazy if we didn't have the internet.  Even for this assignment we need to use the internet.  It supports its position very well by being so relatable and funny.  If we had to revise this for a different audience, we would change it to an older generation so maybe they could also better understand the stance this video is making.

By: Wiley Miller

This is a Non Sequitur comic strip. It was printed during the 2015 election season. It appeals to us because it is straight-to-the-point and it makes it very clear what the author’s opinion on politicians are. The images it uses make it easy to see who is speaking. the speech in this strip is used to display expressions and is the medium that is used to express the author's opinion that politicians avoid certain questions and can’t always be trusted. We wouldn’t revise this medium but if we had to choose another medium to use it would be a short video. The video would be able to present the character’s interactions and attitude just as well as the comic strip.

This cartoon presents its position with visuals as cartoons do. The cop and the group of people are saying don't shoot, but they both have different meanings. The group of people are telling the cop "Don't shoot" because they are at gunpoint, while the cop is telling the media "Don't shoot" because the Media would expose how irresponsible he's being with his power. We chose this ad because it displays how cops have been abusing their power, and how they think it is OK because it is not directly affecting them. If we were revising the cartoon for a different audience, we would probably change the cartoon in a way that showed the cop as helping, even if we don't agree with that. If we were to use it in a different medium, we would have to be more descriptive without words.
It appeals to us because when Hostess said that they were going out of business American's freaked out because Twinkies were no longer going to be made. This ad basically is saying that when that occurred more people were worried about Twinkies rather than more important stuff like saving the Earth. If we were to revise it into a different medium we would do a short video because to a younger generation, videos are more appealing.
